+ More info
What is interesting?
- Sensio Technologies is at the forefront of the trend to 3D not only in movies but also in home entertainment like televisions, DVD players and video games
- Sensio has the technology to make traditional 2D broadcasting currently prevalent to also broadcast in 3D. It has a compression technology that can combine two feeds needed for 3D into one and be able to broadcast and then split at the receiver end (in viewers homes) to create the 3D image.
- Sensio has a patent on its compression technology in the United States. Recently, the patent was extended to cover all spatial compression techniques. This send Sensio`s stock price soaring.
- 3D technology in the living rooms of homes is not far off. Panasonic, Sony & Samsung has announced plans to introduce 3D Televisions. Sony, the maker of Playstation 3 game console also plans to release a 3D game console.
- The view in the industry is that 3D technology will provide the boost similar to the advent of color televisions that came after black and white televisions.
- All these TV manufacturers who are pushing the hardware ie, 3D TVs is going to drive demand for 3D content. This is where Sensio’s technology comes into play. Already Dream works the leading Hollywood studio has announced that its animation releases will all be in 3D
- Sensio has already got the deal to make into 3D the Avatar video game that is riding the wave of the blockbuster 3D movie Avatar
- Many analysts are viewing the advent of 3D technology in home entertainment like the move from cassettes to VHS to DVDs to Blue-ray type transformation.
- Sensio wants to position its technology as the industry standard, so that once the big manufacturers launch 3D TVs, they'll have to pay royalty to Sensio for the technology.
- The patent gave Sensio the legitimacy it needed. The Consumer Electronics Association and the Blu-ray Disc Association have both said they want to establish a standard for 3-D.
- Mr. Routhier says Sensio is fighting to be part of that. The Avatar deal is a big step. Once the option exists, the game will be playable in 3-D.
- Sensio technology was used recently by CBS, LG and NCAA to broadcast in 3D the semi-final and final NCAA basket ball games in over 100 move theatres.
- Recently completed a $10 Million dollar bought deal financing in December 2009.
Risks
Sensio is still losing money and the 3D industry is still early in its evolution. Currently there is no industry standard in 3D encoding and it is hard to figure out if Sensio can be the industry standard or even a dominant player as it is somewhat futuristic. This industry is dominated by heavy weights with big egos (think about the fight of Blue-ray versus HD DVD). Sensio will need to raise additional capital to stay afloat and make the R&D investments to stay competitive in this new but very high profile area dominated by giants. The stock is already up significantly (over 900% in last one year).
