Business Overview

Clearford Industries Inc. (Clearford) is a developer of patented wastewater collection systems “Small Bore Sewer (SBSTM), a watertight, small diameter system that compared to the typical gravity sewer provides superior operational and environmental performance with lower costs. Clearford's SBSTM technology and industry expertise provide the enabling platform to deliver, on a global basis, turnkey, fixed-price wastewater collection, treatment and energy generation solutions that are ideally suited for water-scarce regions, those with unreliable water distribution networks, and new developments seeking a greener approach to water and wastewater management. + More info

What is interesting about Clearford Industries Inc. (TSXV: CLI)?

  • Clearford solves a real and present problem involving water conservation, efficient waste and sewage treatment at a much lower cost than traditional gravity based sewer systems
  • Waste water management and traditional sewer systems are virtually non-existent in much of the developing world, which is witnessing rapid urbanization, water table depletion and generally poor municipal infrastructure and lack of capital to build centralized sewer systems like we have in developed world
  • Traditional gravity based waste water and sewage systems requires large upfront capital cost, more physical disruption as pipes are laid deep underground, and requires higher operational cost and water to move the solid waste to a central plant for treatment.
  • Clearford offers at-source solids segregation of the sewage; that means only supernatant (liquid left over after waste treatment) is transported through pipes (hence smaller pipes), decentralized sludge digestion (no central plant required), less water requirement and no need for large pipes to move the sludge over long distances for processing in a central plant.
  • Clearford’s Small Bore Sewer (SBS™) offers an attractive alternative as it requires lower capital cost for installation, less physical disruption (smaller pipes require less soil to be removed and is not as deep as traditional gravity sewer system pipes), faster installation, needs less water to treat the sewer and produces methane gas (bio gas) in the process, which can be reused for a variety of different productive purposes.
  • Company’s systems are designed to convert waste solids to an alternative fuel source, biogas (methane), resulting in a reduction in the overall volume of sludge to be treated and elimination of the requirement for solids delivery, handling and disposal
  • Company’s system allows for the captured biogas (methane) to be used to generate electricity; thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the discharge of biogas (methane) into the environment
  • Clearford’s systems have successfully been in operation throughout North American communities since 1989
  • The company delivers a Wastewater Integrated Purification System (WIPS) which receives raw sewage, separates and digests solids, enhances methane production, delivers wastewater and methane to collection points, converts methane to electricity and purifies the water to potable quality (if needed)
  • Clearford partners with leading water treatment providers, and works with local constructors and suppliers in each country to deliver integrated water management solutions.
  • Clearford leverages its proprietary SBS™ technology and acts as the systems Integrator for turnkey water, wastewater collection, treatment and water re-use solutions
  • Company states that its system is flexible, modular and easily adaptable to different conditions
  • Company signed a contract to design a waste water solution in the suburb of New Delhi, India  and another contract with two municipal governments in Colombia
  • Recently signed a joint venture contract in China to enable local marketing in the huge Chinese market
  • Company raised $1.16 Million in October 2010

Risks

  • The company is still not profitable and hence will need additional capital to continue to operate. This could potentially result in shareholder dilution.
  • Company will have substantial currency risk as most of the revenue will come from Asia and other developing region
  • Installation of company’s systems depends on government incentives and most of the contracts for sewage utilization will be with foreign governments and this increases the policy, credit and political risk
